DRC Orders Counter-Analysis Over Reported Uranium in Exported Cobalt
The Democratic Republic of Congo has ordered counter-analyses of certain exported cobalt hydroxide shipments following reports that uranium was detected in some of the products.
The Ministry of Mines announced the move on August 21, saying the additional tests will compare available findings and establish the actual uranium concentrations in the affected shipments.
The government said the process is intended to provide a scientific basis for determining whether the exports complied with applicable mining and export regulations.
Government Seeks to Verify Uranium Levels
The controversy follows an investigation published in late July that reported the presence of uranium in cobalt hydroxide originating from the DRC.
Rather than drawing immediate conclusions, the Ministry of Mines said it wants to establish whether uranium is present in the identified shipments, determine its concentration and assess the conditions under which it occurs.
The counter-analysis will therefore be important in determining whether the reported uranium levels represent a regulatory concern and whether the operators involved complied with the requirements governing the production, processing and export of cobalt products.
The government has stressed that the verification process should be based on scientific evidence before any definitive conclusions are reached.
Uranium Naturally Occurs in the Copper-Cobalt Belt
The Ministry of Mines also pointed to the geological characteristics of the DRC’s Copperbelt, where uranium can naturally occur alongside copper and cobalt deposits, particularly in Lualaba and Haut-Katanga provinces.
Authorities said the possible presence of uranium in mineral-bearing material does not, by itself, demonstrate an irregularity or indicate that the composition of exported products was deliberately concealed.
The key issue is therefore the concentration of uranium, whether those levels comply with applicable standards and how the material was handled during mining, processing and export.
Wider Questions Over Critical Mineral Supply Chains
The issue has attracted international attention because the DRC is the world’s leading source of cobalt, a critical mineral used in batteries and other advanced technologies.
A separate investigation by Lighthouse Reports and Le Monde, published in July, estimated that significant quantities of uranium may have left the DRC alongside cobalt-related exports over a number of years.
The findings have raised questions about the monitoring of naturally occurring radioactive elements within the country’s cobalt supply chain.
However, those broader estimates should not be treated as confirmed government findings.
The DRC’s current position is that further analysis is required to establish the composition of the specific shipments under scrutiny.
Results Could Determine Next Steps
The counter-analyses are expected to clarify the uranium content of the affected cobalt hydroxide shipments and establish whether any regulatory requirements were breached.
For the DRC, the outcome could have implications for mineral traceability, export controls and confidence in the country’s critical-minerals supply chain.
Until the additional tests are completed, the government has indicated that the matter remains under investigation and that conclusions should be based on verified scientific results rather than preliminary findings.
